As the 2026 Commonwealth Games unfolds in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 02, www.sports24ghana.com would like to take its readers through the performance of Ghana over the years.

Even though the Commonwealth Games – The quadrennial international multi-sport event that brings together athletes from across the Commonwealth Games was first held in 1930 [then known as the British Empire Games], Ghana first participated in the 1954 Commonwealth Games which was held in Vancouver, British Columbia from 30 July to August 7th.

Since then Ghana has showed up at seventeen Commonwealth Games, missing only in the 1986 Games in Edinburgh. Ghana have won sixty-three [63] medals in the history of the Commonwealth Games – Gold [15], Silver [20], Bronze [28].

Ghana did not win any medal in the 1954 Commonwealth Games, same [0] as the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, Australia [Queensland], however, Robert Kotei became the first ever Ghanaian to win a medal in the history of the Commonwealth Games having jumped 2.01 meters to win bronze in the men’s high jump, behind Chilla Porter [Australia], and Ernle Haisley of Jamaica who won gold.

Michael Ahey became the first athlete to gift Ghana a Commonwealth Games gold medal having lept 8.05m in the men’s long jump event to topple Dave Norris, and Wellesley Clayton from Jamaica.
