StarTimes Ghana has taken steps to settle its outstanding debt of over $800,000 owed to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) under its previous broadcast agreement for the Ghana Premier League.
Eli Kondoh, the company’s Public Relations Officer, confirmed the development in an interview with Joy Sports, stating that a portion of the remaining amount has been paid in recent weeks.
“If you’re owing someone in excess of five million dollars and it’s left with a little over $800,000, it means a lot has already gone into the project,” Kondoh explained. “Just a few weeks ago, some of that outstanding balance was paid. StarTimes remains committed to the development of Ghana football.”
The five-year broadcast deal, worth $5.25 million and signed in 2020, expired at the end of the recently concluded league season. In the absence of a contract renewal, broadcast rights for the 2023/24 season were transferred to AFA TV and Globe TV.
Although there were negotiations for a possible renewal during the season, the GFA officially announced in May that talks had broken down due to StarTimes’ failure to clear the remaining balance of the initial deal.
Despite the collapse of renewal discussions, Kondoh disclosed that StarTimes is still open to future collaborations with the GFA. “It might not necessarily be for the Ghana Premier League—but maybe an aspect of it or in the area of production,” he noted. “Talks are ongoing, and once concluded, the details will be communicated.”
StarTimes’ recent payment signals its intention to maintain ties with Ghana football and possibly re-enter the broadcast space under new terms.
