Norwich City winger Borja Sainz has completed a move to Portuguese giants FC Porto in a £14.25 million transfer, signing a five-year contract with the 30-time Primeira Liga champions.
The 24-year-old departs Carrow Road after an impressive two-year spell, during which he established himself as a key figure in the Canaries’ attack. Last season, Sainz was Norwich’s top scorer with 18 goals in the Championship, despite missing six matches due to suspension.
Sainz initially joined Norwich from Turkish side Giresunspor in June 2023 and quickly made an impact, scoring on his debut in an EFL Cup tie against Fulham. His debut season included a stunning FA Cup strike against Liverpool at Anfield, and he capped the 2024–25 campaign with standout performances including two hat-tricks against Derby County and Plymouth Argyle.
The Spaniard’s blistering form early in the season saw him net 16 goals in his first 20 appearances across all competitions. However, his momentum slowed in the second half of the campaign, managing just two more goals and finishing as runner-up in the Championship top scorer chart behind Leeds United’s Joel Piroe.
His season was also marred by a six-match ban after a spitting incident involving Sunderland defender Chris Mepham in December 2024. Sainz issued a public apology, describing his actions as “completely out of character” and expressing disappointment in himself.
Despite the controversy, Norwich’s sporting director Ben Knapper praised the winger’s overall contribution to the club.
“During his time with us, Borja’s performances and impact were brilliant,” Knapper said. “He gave us many memorable moments, scored spectacular goals, and often proved to be the match-winner.”
“This is a fantastic move for all parties. Borja now progresses to the next stage of his career with a top European club in FC Porto. It also demonstrates our ability to identify and develop players for the highest levels of the game. Everyone involved deserves huge credit.”
New Norwich head coach Liam Manning also endorsed the move following the team’s 3-1 pre-season victory over Northampton Town.
“It’s a terrific deal for the club,” Manning told BBC Radio Norfolk. “It allows us to strengthen the team, which is a necessary part of modern football. We’re working hard behind the scenes to make sure the squad is in the best possible shape going forward.”
With Sainz’s departure confirmed, Norwich have already begun reinforcements. Denmark international Mathias Kvistgaarden has been brought in, capable of playing both as a winger and a striker.
However, speculation continues to swirl around American forward Josh Sargent, who has been linked with newly promoted Premier League side Burnley. Sargent, who has three years remaining on his contract, could yet follow Sainz out of the club.
Norwich City begin their 2025–26 Championship season away at Birmingham City on Friday, 8 August.
