Liverpool Football Club has officially retired Diogo Jota’s number 20 jersey in a moving tribute to the beloved winger, who tragically passed away in a car accident on July 3, 2025.

The football world was left in shock and mourning following the sudden death of the 28-year-old Portuguese star. News of the accident sent ripples across the global football community, with an outpouring of tributes from teammates, former clubs, opponents, and fans worldwide.

Jota, known for his sharp instincts, tireless work ethic, and clinical finishing, had become a fan favorite since joining Liverpool in 2020. Over the years, he delivered countless memorable moments at Anfield, earning the admiration of supporters and solidifying his legacy as one of the Reds’ most exciting attacking talents in recent times.

In the wake of his passing, Liverpool fans flooded social media with tributes, sharing their favorite memories of Jota’s time in red—from his stunning hat-trick against Atalanta to his crucial goals in high-stakes matches. A strong chorus of supporters also called on the club to retire his shirt number as a permanent symbol of respect.

The club responded swiftly and compassionately, announcing that the number 20 shirt would never be worn again. In a statement, Liverpool FC said:
“Diogo was more than a player — he was a cherished member of our family. His passion, humility, and dedication touched everyone at the club. Retiring the number 20 jersey is a small but heartfelt gesture to ensure his legacy lives on forever at Anfield.”

Plans are also underway to honor Jota with a memorial at the stadium, and a minute of silence will be held ahead of the team’s upcoming matches as players and fans continue to mourn the devastating loss.

Jota’s death is not just a blow to Liverpool, but to the football world at large — a cruel reminder of how fleeting life can be. His legacy, however, will endure, etched in the hearts of fans and forever honored in the stadium where he gave so much.
