Bayer Leverkusen have completed the signing of England Under-21 international Jarell Quansah from Liverpool, securing the 22-year-old defender on a five-year contract.

The transfer is reportedly worth up to £35 million, which includes £5 million in performance-related add-ons. A product of Liverpool’s academy, Quansah made 58 appearances for the Reds, featuring 13 times in the Premier League last season as the club clinched the league title.

Quansah also played a vital role in England’s triumph at the UEFA Under-21 European Championship earlier this year, underlining his status as one of the country’s brightest defensive prospects.

Leverkusen’s Sporting Director Simon Rolfes expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, praising Quansah’s dynamism, speed, and resilience in duels. His arrival is seen as a key component of the club’s squad rebuild under newly appointed head coach Erik ten Hag, who took over following Xabi Alonso’s departure to Real Madrid. Leverkusen finished runners-up to Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga last season.

Quansah joins a changing Leverkusen side that recently sanctioned the high-profile sales of Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz to Liverpool, with the latter commanding a record-breaking fee of £100 million, plus £16 million in potential bonuses.

Liverpool, now managed by Arne Slot, are expected to reinvest the Quansah transfer fee in strengthening their backline, with Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi emerging as a top target amid ongoing uncertainty over Ibrahima Konaté’s future at Anfield.

Importantly, Liverpool have retained a buy-back clause in Quansah’s contract, preserving the option to re-sign the young defender should he continue his development in the Bundesliga.
