Ghana has officially confirmed its status as host of the 24th Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) African Senior Athletics Championships following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the CAA, Ghana Athletics, and the Government of Ghana.

The MoU, which formalises Ghana’s commitment to stage the prestigious continental event from May 12 to May 17, 2026, was signed on behalf of the Republic of Ghana by the Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adam. The championships will be hosted at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium in Legon, Accra.

The signing ceremony took place at the Ministry of Sports and Recreation Conference Room and was attended by a high-level delegation from the Confederation of African Athletics. The CAA delegation was led by its President, Mr. Hamad Kalkaba Malboum, and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Lamine Fati, with Chief Tonobok Okowa heading the CAA Region Two delegation.

Ghana Athletics was represented by its President, Mr. Bawah Fuseini, while the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) delegation was led by Lawyer Richard Akakpovie. The National Sports Authority (NSA) was represented by the Deputy Director-General in charge of Technical Services, Madam Victoria Commey. Several other key stakeholders were also present, all expressing confidence in Ghana’s preparedness to deliver a successful championship.

The MoU outlines the framework for collaboration among the CAA, Ghana Athletics, and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation as preparations intensify ahead of the 2026 championships.

Earlier in the day, officials from the CAA and Ghana Athletics paid courtesy visits to the National Sports Authority, the Ghana Olympic Committee, and the University of Ghana Sports Directorate as part of broader stakeholder engagements.

The 24th African Senior Athletics Championships are expected to attract the continent’s elite athletes and officials, further reinforcing Ghana’s growing reputation as a dependable host for major international sporting events.

Building on the successful hosting of the 13th African Games, Ghana is aiming to raise the bar even higher in 2026. The experience, infrastructure, and organisational expertise demonstrated during the All African Games have strengthened confidence in the country’s ability to deliver another world-class athletics championship.
