The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has inaugurated the maiden Governing Board of the Ghana Sports Fund, marking what officials describe as a significant shift in the financing and long-term development of sports in the country.

The inauguration ceremony was held on Thursday at the Ministry’s conference room in Accra, where Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Iddie Adams said the establishment of the Fund would introduce structure, transparency and sustainability into sports financing in Ghana.

“Today marks a historic moment for Ghana sports,” the Minister stated. “For many years, the sports sector has spoken with one voice about the need for a reliable and dedicated system to finance sports development. That call has been consistent and long overdue.”

According to the Minister, the Ghana Sports Fund is designed to support key areas such as athlete development, grassroots sports, sports infrastructure, high-performance preparation and strategic planning by federations.

“This Fund places our country in a position to move from aspiration to performance,” Adams said. “But a Fund alone does not transform sport. Leadership does. Governance does. Discipline does.”

The eleven-member Governing Board will be chaired by Prof. Koryoe Anim-Wright, who represents the Office of the President and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.

Other members of the Board are Dr. David Kofi Wuaku, Mrs. Wilhelmina Asamoah, Mr. Duah Alhassan Oteng, Mrs. Deborah Adei Djanie, Mr. Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, Mr. Ernest Thompson, boxing legend Azumah Nelson, as well as three presidential appointees — Ms. Belinda Plange, Hon. Rachel Florence Appoh and Hon. Dickson Kyere-Duah.

Minister Adams charged the Board to uphold the highest standards of integrity and fairness in the discharge of its duties.

“This Fund must serve sport, not interests. It must reward performance, not proximity,” he stressed. “The success of this Fund will depend on your independence and your commitment to the principles on which it was established.”

The Governing Board is tasked with overseeing the implementation of the Sports Fund Act and guiding the allocation of financial resources across Ghana’s sports ecosystem, with the aim of ensuring sustainable growth and improved performance at all levels of sport nationwide.
