Ghana’s national phygital basketball team, a flagship project of the Ghana Esports Federation (GESF), is poised to make history as it travels to the United Arab Emirates later this month to compete in the prestigious Games of the Future in Abu Dhabi.

The Ghanaian contingent, made up of four players and three officials, will represent the country from December 17 to 24, 2025, at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre. The annual international tournament brings together more than 100 nations and attracts over 2,000 spectators, celebrating the fusion of physical sport and digital gaming in a rapidly evolving global sporting landscape.

Ghana will compete in the Phygital Basketball: 3on3 FreeStyle discipline, a unique hybrid format that combines esports precision with real-life athletic performance. The competition is played in two weighted stages: a digital round using the latest licensed version of 3on3 FreeStyle: Rebound, followed by a physical 2-on-2 basketball match on a standard 3-x-3 court.

Scores from the digital stage are carried over into the physical contest, with the combined total determining the winner. The discipline boasts an overall prize pool of $400,000, underscoring the growing commercial and competitive appeal of phygital sports. The format demands tactical intelligence, hand-eye coordination, stamina, and teamwork, defining a new generation of hybrid athletes.

Speaking ahead of the tournament, GESF President Mr. Igor Boumekpo highlighted the historic significance of Ghana’s participation, noting that Ghana is one of only two African nations competing in phygital basketball at this year’s Games of the Future.

He also acknowledged the crucial support provided by the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and the National Sports Authority, whose backing has included funding and diplomatic assistance to ensure the team travels fully prepared and well-equipped for the competition.

GESF’s growing influence in the global phygital movement has been further strengthened through its partnership with the World Phygital Community, a collaboration that continues to position Ghana as a serious contender in this emerging sporting frontier.

With sixteen teams set to battle for honours, Ghana faces a stern test in their opening match against the United States, a fixture that promises to showcase the nation’s readiness to compete on the world stage.

As the countdown to Abu Dhabi continues, Ghana’s phygital basketball team carries not only national hopes but also the ambition to establish the country as a trailblazer in Africa’s rapidly expanding esports and hybrid sports ecosystem.
