The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has taken a significant step toward improving player welfare and raising the professional standards of the Ghana Premier League by introducing a minimum wage structure for players.
The proposal, already approved by the GFA’s Executive Council (EXCO), will be presented to Congress for final approval ahead of the 2025/26 league season. The initiative aims to ensure fair and consistent compensation for all players across the league, with a mandatory base salary that clubs must adhere to.
GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum confirmed the development in an interview with Star FM, stating,
“The GFA will introduce a minimum wage structure for players in the Ghana Premier League after it was approved by EXCO.”
The move comes in response to growing concerns over low wages and financial instability among top-flight clubs, which have contributed to the exodus of talent from Ghana to foreign leagues in search of better opportunities.
By establishing a wage floor, the GFA hopes to boost player morale, enhance job security, and stem the outflow of local talent. The policy is also expected to elevate the overall competitiveness and standards of the domestic league.
With final approval pending, the implementation of this structure marks a transformative moment for Ghanaian football and signals the GFA’s commitment to prioritizing the welfare of its players.
