Brighton striker Evan Ferguson is set to undergo a medical with Serie A side AS Roma ahead of completing a loan move aimed at reviving his promising but recently stalled career.
The 20-year-old Republic of Ireland international arrived in Italy over the weekend and was seen greeting Roma fans and signing autographs, signalling the move is close to completion. Ferguson is expected to join the Giallorossi on a season-long loan as he looks to regain form and consistency following a difficult spell.
Once considered one of the Premier League’s most exciting young talents, Ferguson’s trajectory was disrupted by injuries and a dip in form, which saw him fall down the pecking order at Brighton. Despite a standout 2022–23 season in which he scored nine goals and earned a nomination for the PFA Young Player of the Year award, his impact has diminished, with just one goal scored since November 2023.
The forward spent the second half of last season on loan at West Ham United under then-manager Graham Potter, but struggled to make an impression, featuring in only eight games and starting just once.
Roma have identified Ferguson as a key reinforcement for the upcoming campaign following Tammy Abraham’s departure on loan to Turkish side Besiktas, where he has reunited with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Talks between Roma and Brighton progressed swiftly, with both clubs agreeing to the move as beneficial for Ferguson’s development.
Under the guidance of Roma manager Daniele De Rossi, Ferguson will be hoping to rediscover the sharpness that once made him a breakout star in English football and a staple in the Irish national team setup.
With Brighton now under the leadership of new head coach Fabien Hürzeler, Ferguson was not expected to feature prominently in the early stages of the season, making the loan move to Italy a timely opportunity for regular minutes and a fresh start.
