Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Adams, has underscored the profound significance of the Baba Yara Sports Stadium to the nation’s football heritage.
This notable statement follows his thorough inspection of the facility, accompanied by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Frank Amoakohene.
As part of a comprehensive nationwide tour to evaluate the state of major sports infrastructure, Minister Adams visited the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.
The stadium, formerly a thriving venue for international football matches, was stripped of its hosting rights for CAF and FIFA-sanctioned competitions last September, a development that has had adverse effects on the country’s sports industry.
“When it comes to football in Ghana, Baba Yara is one of the most cherished grounds. Players often refer to it as the ‘Mecca of Ghana Football.’ And if your Mecca is in poor condition, it should be a source of concern.”
This revered venue has been the backdrop for some of the most electrifying moments in Ghanaian football history, with legendary players showcasing their skills on its pitch.
Hon. Adams assured the public that the government is taking tangible steps to restore the stadium to its full operational capacity.
“I want to assure everyone that, in line with President Mahama’s directive, we are committed to ensuring that all sporting activities at the Baba Yara Stadium resume as soon as possible,” the Minister added.
The Sports Minister’s inspection visit forms part of ongoing initiatives to upgrade Ghana’s sports infrastructure, ensuring that facilities meet international standards for competitions.
Prior to his visit to Baba Yara, Hon. Adams had toured the Borteyman Sports Complex to assess the state of Ghana’s flagship multi-purpose facility, which hosted the 13th African Games.
