Salford City have confirmed the return of talented young goalkeeper Matty Young from Premier League side Sunderland on a season-long loan for the 2025/26 campaign.
The 18-year-old shot-stopper previously impressed during a loan spell with the Ammies last season, making 27 appearances across all competitions. His performances between the sticks were highlighted by a remarkable run of six consecutive clean sheets over the festive period.
Young, a product of the Sunderland academy, joined the club at just seven years old and has been tipped as one of their brightest goalkeeping prospects.
Speaking on his return to the Peninsula Stadium, Young expressed his ambitions for the upcoming season:
“Knowing what I am capable of and my ability on the pitch, I think there is more expectation now with what I can go and deliver on a matchday,” he told the club website.
“I have set very high expectations on myself to go and push on, and to be the best keeper in the league this year.”
Young is optimistic about Salford’s promotion hopes, adding:
“I think the lads will be pushing for automatics this year. If not, the play-offs, so that is something me and the team will be looking forward to, and that is the end goal.”
His return provides a major boost to Karl Robinson’s squad as they look to improve on last season’s performance and make a strong push for promotion in League Two.
