Shrewsbury Town have announced the signing of Anthony Scully on a one-year contract, marking their second addition of the week as they continue to bolster their squad ahead of the new League Two season.
The 26-year-old winger joins on a free transfer after being released by Portsmouth earlier this summer. Scully spent parts of last season on loan at Colchester United, where he made 18 appearances across two separate spells.
This move sees Scully reunite with Shrewsbury head coach Michael Appleton, under whom he previously thrived during a successful stint at Lincoln City. The pair enjoyed a productive spell together, with Scully scoring 31 goals in 98 appearances for the Imps after joining from West Ham United’s academy in February 2020.
Following his departure from Lincoln, Scully moved to Wigan Athletic in September 2022 when they were in the Championship. However, his time at Wigan and subsequently at Portsmouth was hampered by limited playing opportunities, making just five appearances for the Latics and nine for Pompey over two seasons.
At Shrewsbury, Scully becomes the club’s seventh summer signing, joining the likes of goalkeeper Elyh Harrison, defenders Tom Anderson, Sam Stubbs, Will Boyle, midfielder Sam Clucas, and Tom Sang.
Director of Football Micky Moore expressed his excitement over the deal, emphasizing the value Scully brings to the squad:

I’m really happy we got this over the line before the season starts because we believe he offers something different to what we’ve got in the squad.
