Manchester City have completed the signing of highly-rated Norwegian midfielder Sverre Nypan from Rosenborg in a deal worth £12.5 million. The 18-year-old has signed a five-year contract with the Premier League champions, signaling another strategic investment in the club’s long-term future.

Nypan, who has represented Norway at all youth levels up to the Under-21s, is expected to go out on loan for the 2025/26 season to gain valuable first-team experience. However, if a loan move isn’t finalized before City’s pre-season training begins on 28 July, the teenager will join Pep Guardiola’s first-team squad for preparations ahead of the new campaign.

Expressing his excitement, Nypan described the move as a dream come true:
“It’s a dream for any young footballer to become part of this club and to join such a group of world-class talent,” he said.
“I am still very young with a lot to learn, but the chance to be coached by Pep Guardiola, the best manager in the world, will only help me become a better player.”

City’s acquisition of Nypan highlights their continued focus on youth development and securing top global talent before they fully break out on the international stage.

Norwegian football journalist Andreas Korssund praised the move, calling Nypan “one of the best talents in Norway,” and noted his exceptional development despite his age:
“He’s been playing at a very high level despite being so young. He’s widely regarded as the next big thing from the Norwegian league, so it’s not surprising he’s earned such a significant move,” Korssund said.
“The only surprise may be that he’s joined Manchester City directly at this stage, rather than following the path of other Norwegian stars like Erling Haaland or Antonio Nusa, who opted for intermediate clubs to guarantee playing time before moving to elite European sides.”

At Rosenborg, Nypan stood out for his composure, vision, and technical maturity far beyond his years. His transition to Manchester City offers him the chance to develop under the tutelage of one of the game’s greatest minds, while also placing him within an elite environment that has successfully nurtured some of football’s brightest prospects.

With this signing, City continue to reinforce their reputation not only as a dominant force in global football but also as a prime destination for emerging talents.
