Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games: Closing ceremony – ticket prices, and what to expect
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

We still have an amazing week of world class sport ahead of us in the Commonwealth Games. By the time the closing ceremony begins, 1,875 medals will have been handed out to athletes placing first, second or third in the 283 medal events.

It’ll be their time to cut loose and celebrate at the official closing ceremony, to be held at the Alexander Stadium. The opening ceremony really was one for the ages so we’re really looking forward to the final spectacle, even if it is tinged with the sadness that the games are over.

However, organisers are keeping the details of the ceremony very close to their chest, so we’re expecting some surprises. Rumour has it, there’ll be musical performances worth tuning in for. Whether it’ll beat that Duran Duran hit medley remains to be seen!

The ceremony will be televised, on BBC One from 8pm until 10pm. Tickets to see the ceremony live at the Alexander Stadium are still available, though less expensive tickets do appear to be sold out.

Category E tickets were priced at £22 for adults and just £8 for kids, but they’re showing as sold out when we try to pick one up. The category D ones are still available at time of writing, at £65 for adults and £20 for under-16s.

Tickets in the higher brackets were still available at the time of writing this article. Categories A, B and C will be closer to the action, we understand, and as a result, they’re pretty pricey. For category B seats, you’re looking at £195, and it looks as though you’ll have to pay that much for kids too. Same in category A, only tickets for that are a whopping £260. Category C tickets are £125.

This does mean that the closing ceremony is less expensive to attend than the opening ceremony, where category A tickets were going for £290.

While we don’t know exactly what to expect from the Birmingham event, we do know how things went down at the 2018 Commonwealth Games closing ceremony at the Carrara Stadium on Australia’s Gold Coast, so that might provide some context.

Dignitaries, including Prince Edward, were in attendance and they watched as singers like Amy Shark and Archie Roach performed. Poet Solli Raphael recited a poem about the games and speeches were delivered by senior sports officials.

Then, the games were officially declared closed and there was a handover to Birmingham. We’ll likely see Brum hand over the mantle at the end of this years’ ceremony, to the Australian state of Victoria. The games will be held across four cities there in March 2026.
