Sixteen-year-old Ghanaian para-athlete Gilbert Ampiah has taken a major step toward international recognition after successfully completing his T44 classification in the high jump, clearing him to compete on the global stage.

The talented athlete from St. Augustine’s College is now set to represent Ghana at the 2025 Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan International Para Athletics Meeting in Marrakech, Morocco, scheduled from April 24 to 27. The prestigious event also serves as a qualification pathway for the Commonwealth Games and the Paralympic Games, marking a significant milestone in Ampiah’s young but rapidly rising career.

Ampiah underwent the mandatory classification process between April 21 and 23, a key requirement that formally places athletes within recognized para-athletics categories. His successful classification confirms his eligibility to compete in sanctioned international competitions and opens the door to elite global events.

Despite being physically challenged from birth, Ampiah has consistently defied expectations through discipline, determination, and exceptional talent. His rapid progression in high jump is reflected in a series of remarkable personal bests.

In 2023, he cleared 1.60 meters at Ekumfi Atwa, defeating able-bodied competitors in the process. He later raised the bar to 1.82 meters during an inter-house competition at St. Augustine’s College before recording an impressive 1.86 meters at a recent meet, highlighting his steady improvement and growing confidence.

Gilbert’s journey has made him a source of inspiration for many Ghanaians, particularly young athletes with disabilities. His resilience and commitment to excellence continue to demonstrate that limitations can be overcome with courage and belief.

With his classification now complete and international debut imminent, Ampiah is poised to make a strong impact in Marrakech as he carries Ghana’s hopes onto the para-athletics stage. His story represents not just sporting promise, but the power of perseverance and opportunity in transforming lives through sport.
